One of the main challenges in the synthesis of drug delivery carriers is the ability to precisely control the release of the drug. The release of Nitric Oxide (NO) from the decomposition of S-nitrosothiols (RSNOs) in the presence of gold nanoparticles is a promising approach since the amount of NO released is controlled by the surface of the nanoparticles (NPs). Combining the analytical technique Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), which allows the ultra detection of molecules, with microfluidics, offering a microenvironment to improve the control of the reactions, converts this interdisciplinary project a strong proposal for the real time detection of nitric oxide. In addition, in situ synchrotron radiation Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) will be employed to study the evolution of the nanoparticle synthesis and further coating with the thiol in a single droplet.Therefore, this project involves two steps a) the synthesis of the most suitable gold nanoparticles in microdroplets and b) the reaction between the gold nanoparticles and RSNOs followed in situ by SERS. Further, both steps are intended to be tracked in situ by SAXS on the SAXS1 beam line at the LNLS. (AU)
