Abstract

Obesity is now regarded as a global epidemic and affects all income groups in Brazil. The bariatric surgery has been observed as a therapeutic alternative for the treatment of obesity and may result in improvement or resolution of metabolic disorders, improving psychological health and consequently improve the quality of life. The efficacy of bariatric surgery has been widely discussed with the weight loss cited as most important benefit. However, the loss of weight is connected to a weight loss of skeletal muscle mass together with adipose tissue, thus contributing to decrease the resting metabolic rate and generating possibility of regained weight in the postoperative period of patients. Furthermore, bariatric surgery to decrease body weight of individuals could influence the oxidation of nutrients and difficulty in maintaining weight loss . Thus, this study aims to determine whether there are changes in resting metabolic rate and macronutrient oxidation in the long term in patients who undergo bariatric surgery.
