Abstract

The L-amino acid oxidases isolated and characterized from snake venom (SV-LAAOs) have many biological and pharmacological effects, such as induction of apoptosis, cytotoxicity, hemorrhage, hemolysis, edema, bactericidal and anti-parasitic activities. The CR-LAAO is an L-amino acid oxidase isolated from Calloselasma rhodostoma snake venom, which was isolated and characterized by Ponnudurai et al. (1994). There are several studies with this protein in relation to its structural features and part of its functionality. However, studies on the genotoxic effects that the protein can cause in the human body have not yet been described. The comet assay, which detects single and double strand breaks of DNA and alkali-labile sites, will be used to elucidate the mechanisms of action of this toxin on the genomic instability. The results may contribute to the elucidation of the mechanisms of action of CR-LAAO and its possible application in the biomedical field.
