Abstract

The genus Ischnocnema comprises 32 species divided into five species series. Among them, the I. guentheri species series contains 10 nominal species distributed mainly in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest. The taxonomy of this species series has been greatly discussed over the past years and its phylogenetic position has been quite unstable. Also, within the I. guentheri species series, some species have a quite confusing taxonomic status. Ischnocnema guentheri was for a long time thought to be a widespread species and, despite its type locality is within the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the species was considered present in more six Brazilian states. However, recent bioacoustics and molecular studies indicated that I. guentheri may actually represent a complex of at least six species. Another example within the I. guentheri species series, Ischnocnema izecksohni was considered endemic to the "Quadrilátero Ferrífero", southernmost portion of the "Espinhaço" range, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The species, described from the municipality of Belo Horizonte, is the closest species of I. nasuta. However, bioacoustics data confirmed that I. izecksohni is more widely distributed, reaching the "Mantiqueira" mountain range, also in the state of Minas Gerais. Based on these data and on the fact that I. izecksohni is described based on subjective morphological characters, some authors have questioned the validity of this species with respect to I. nasuta. The present PhD research project aims to make a taxonomic review of the I. guentheri species series and to delimit the species boundaries of the group based on bioacoustics, morphological and molecular data, and also to test the monophyly of this species series as it is known today, using molecular data.
