Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disorder that results in hyperglycemia as a consequence of insulin deficiency that alters the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats with increased release of ketoacids into the plasma, which may cause the diabetics ketoacidosis and can lead death. Insulin administration and feed management that minimizes postprandial glycemic wave form the basis of treatment. The goal of therapy is glycemic control, which can be monitored via glycemic waves and serum glycosylated proteins. It is known that the amount, source and processing of starch in the diet may determine the glycemic wave in dogs. Sources differences between simple and complex starch in glycemic control have been observed in health and diabetic dogs. However, the beneficial effects of resistant starch derived from the extrusion process under the glycemic wave so far only been evaluated in healthy dogs. This studs aims to evaluate the effects of resistant starch derived from extrusion process on glycemic control in dogs with naturally acquired DM. Ten dogs affected with DM, males or females, of varying ages, without others concomitant disorders, selected from routine HOVET/FMVZ/USP will be employed. The animals will be fed a control diet (formulated with sources of complex starch, indicated for diabetic dogs) and a test diet (higher amount resistant starch derived from extrusion process and lower rate of gelation process), during eight weeks each diet. The design will be double-blinded and the distribution of each diet will be drawn. Glycemic waves of 48 hours by a continuous glucose measurement system installed on the animal, clinical and biochemical parameters will be assessed at the beginning and end of evaluation period of the control and test diets. Parametric and non-parametric statistical tests will be used to analyze the results. (AU)
