Abstract

In young permanent teeth that suffered irreversible damage due the infection or local trauma before of the normal physiological closure of the root apex, beyond to treat the infection, there is also the need of the apex lock and apical periodontitis remineralization, representing a real clinical challenge. Even after endodontic treatment, both in teeth with open apex or not, refractory infections may develop because of persistent or invasion of new pathogens. Synthetic materials more suitable for the treatment of primary and permanent teeth with pulp / periapical involvement are calcium hydroxide (CH) and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). However, currently has studied biological materials that can stimulate the natural tissue regeneration preserving the epithelial sheath of Hertwig in order to stimulate the differentiation of cells of the apical papilla in odontoblasts. Many authors have explored the use of herbal medicines in order to obtain new compounds that have therapeutic properties. Among these, are flavonoids, natural phenolic compounds which are present in fruits and vegetables and have different properties, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, osteogenic and antiosteoclastogênica. Thus the aim of this study is to analyze the antimicrobial activity of flavonoids Taxifolin, Pinocembrin, Galangin and Chrysin against Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Actinomyces israelii in planktonic culture and biofilm; and to determine the effect of these flavonoids on the genes expression related to the bone and dentin mineralization process.
