Abstract

This project seeks to apply for a Research Internship Application (BEPE) at the Institute of Data Analysis and Visualization (IDAV) from the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), under the supervision of Professor Bernd Hamann. The current doctoral research addresses the usage of Multidimensional Visualization techniques to support exploratory data analysis tasks related to identifying relevant attributes to understand the behavior of a multivariate phenomenon. It involves an interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers from the Department of Cartography of UNESP at Presidente Prudente, who study the effects of ionospheric scintillation, a phenomenon that affects measurements obtained by Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). A database is available that records data on this phenomenon, and our hypothesis is that exploratory visualization can be successfully applied to assist experts in identifying the set of variables and corresponding behavior that determine and explain the occurrence of high scintillation indices. Our goal is to develop and validate a visual framework to assist users identifying how different attributes relate to the behavior of this time-varying phenomenon. The solution obtained will hopefully contribute to better understanding the issues involved and be applicable to other problems with similar characteristics. (AU)
