Abstract

In the late 1990s the homicide mortality rate (TMH) began to show a downward trend in Sao Paulo but still today we cannot know for sure the determinants of this reduction. Part of the difficulty in understanding this movement lies in the fact that the studies are limited to short time series and do not use comparative approaches. A closer look on the evolution of homicides in Brazil shows that different from what happened in the 80s and 90s, the recent movements are diverse between States and Capitals. It is therefore essential to analyze the reduction in São Paulo with the backdrop of the broader national scene. With this project we intend to move forward in the analysis of trajectories of homicides in Brazil seeking to identify socioeconomic, demographic and security factors associated with different trajectories, having municipalities with over 100 thousand inhabitants unit of analysis. We will develop an ecological time series (1980-2012) study. We will use data on homicide mortality and external causes of undetermined intent, socioeconomic and demographic indicators and public safety indicators. The investigation of trajectories will be made based on the Global Based Trajectory Models. As part of my stay at the Violence Research Center I will participate in the development of a multi-center research protocol on determinants of violent behavior among children and adolescents with a view to seeking funding.
