Study of relationships between serum C-Reactive Protein and body composition in persons with spinal cord injury

Abstract

The Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is an injury which current estimate of incidence in South America has a rate of 25 people for million inhabitants and it has heart diseases as the main reason for death casualitys. This data confirmed by the risk factors analysis, such as, of carotid artery intima thickness(MATOS-SOUZA et.al 2009). In other instance, the metabolic syndrome also has appeared as a risk fator in this population (MARUYAMA et al. 2008; MYERS et al. 2007; FROST et al. 2005). The inflammation has also been shown in this population. (MANNS et al. 2005; FROST et al. 2005) and happens along with the body compositions changes (specially lean mass reduction and fat mass growth). Apparently the exercise has been shown as an important factor for the improvement of inflammatory profile in individuals with spinal cord injury (NEEFKES0ZONNEVELD et al. 2015). Although scientifics studies of this issue has superficial information about those mecanisms fenomenals. The target of this study is analysis the relation of visceral fat and the C Reaction Protein in individuals with SCI. Adicionally this study intends to analysis the influence of the injury levels (para and quadriplegic) about the personal inflammatory profile and compare the difference caused by the exercise practice. 4 groups will be analysed, two of them paraplegics (sedentarys and athletes with n=10 in each subgroup) and two groups of quadriplegics ( sedentary and atheltes with n=10 in each subgroup). The analysis of body composition will be conduced using the magnetic resonance spectroscopy for visceral fat analysis and DXA for fat and lean mass analysis. The levels of sérum C-Reactive Protein will be analysed by blood colecttion with a marker of systemic inflammation. The participants will be oriented to keep their usual diet at the day before blood colecttion. The group comparison will be done by the Factor of Variance Analysis for the data that reach a normaly level and the tes of Kruskal-Wallis for the abnormal data. For multiple comparation will be used the Tukey e Dunn post hoc, for Anova e Kruskal-Wallis respectively. For the correlation between analysed issues will be used the Pearson Correlation and Linear Regression analysis will be conduced to diagnostic a relation between the groups relations. The datas will be analysed in the statics R for Windows, version 3.01.0 with a interface R Studio 1.6. The level of significance will be p<0,05 will be applied for all analysis.
