Abstract

Brazil is a world leader in the production of ethanol, a pioneer in the ethanol industry. However, the country is already facing a major limitation imposed by the first-generation ethanol production technology. Thus, new alternatives have been proposed, especially the technology of second generation, which is to use the lignocellulosic residues of cane sugar for ethanol production. A major challenge of this technology is the development of an industrial yeast that can not only produce ethanol from hexoses (glucose) as usual, but also from pentoses representing 15% to 45% of the lignocellulosic material. The objective of this work is to use bioinformatics tools and systems biology to study the transcriptome, proteome and metabolome of the fermenting yeast xylose in different fermentation conditions. The project also entails the integration of the results generated by the various omics through dynamic modeling of networks and metabolite flow optimizations in silico using the available model of yeast adapted to the xylose consumption.
