Abstract

DNA methylation is an important epigenetic modification in many cellular processes, playing an important role as regulator of gene expression. Recent studies show the broad association between methylation levels and gene expression variation. However, the association between genetic variation and DNA methylation, as well as the genetic determinants of DNA methylation patterns are still unclear. Genetic variations in CpG sites can disrupt methylation sites and thus dramatically change the methylation state. The introduction or removal of a CpG site, that are likely sites of DNA methylation, has been suggested as a potential mechanism by which single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) can affect gene function via epigenetic changes. Polymorphisms in regions controlled by methylation can alter the epigenetic regulation of the region, and can also result in a change in gene expression. The project aims to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms subject to the epigenetic control of DNA methylation in CpG sites (meSNPs), as well as to determine its possible association with the methylation profile of production-related genes in cattle. The results will be important for further use in association studies between different bovine breeds, for example, to identify genes associated with disease susceptibility, development or performance.
