Abstract

In the last few years with the increased demand by the population for a healthier life style and the growth of the natural colorants market in the world, there is a search for new natural colorants to be applied as bioadditives in several industries such as pharmaceutical , food and cosmetics. Natural colorants may be produced by animals, plants and microorganisms. Among the latter, filamentous fungi can be considered an alternative source for these compounds. In order to get these biocompounds without contaminants (pure) to identify their molecular structure is a fundamental step to evaluate the application into products on the market. The objective of this project is to purify natural coloring produced by submerged cultivation of Penicillium purpurogenum using liquid-liquid extraction. For this purpose, the colorants will be initially produced and after experiments with conventional liquid-liquid extraction using organic solvents of different polarities will be performed to purify the natural colorants present in the fermentation broth of P. purpurogenum DPUA 1275 and subsequently determine its chemical structure by spectrophotometric methods.
