Abstract

Our objective in this study will be to evaluate, together with Universidad de Zaragoza, the information obtained over five years of experiments assessing nutritional plans for beef cattle. We aim to study the data through meta-analysis, which will result in a more in-depth and consistent evaluation of the individual data, because separate conclusions, in some cases, do not allow for the combined interpretation of results. The present proposal will be achieved through a partnership between the Polo Regional da APTA/Colina - SP and Universidad de Zaragoza. Data from five years of experiments, conducted between 2005 and 2013 will be evaluated, totaling 507 animals. The individual objective of the experiments was to evaluate the impact of nutritional strategies during the production cycle (from weaning to slaughter) on performance, and carcass and meat characteristics. The nutritional strategies consisted of the integration between type and level of supply of supplement and periods of the year (dry season and wet season, during the post-weaning phase, on pastures), which resulted in different animal growth rates. The different nutritional strategies also had a different impact on the carcass fat cover and quality. The nutritional plans for the post-weaning phase were determined according to the qualitative and quantitative deficiencies of the forage in each season of the year (first dry and wet seasons in the animal's life). The animals were finished during the second dry season of their lives, with the supply of a high level of concentrate (feedlot or pasture). In all experiments, the forage was evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively, and performance data (body weight, average daily gain) were collected. Comparative slaughters were performed at the beginning and end of each dry and wet season; all remaining animals were slaughtered at the end of the experiment (second dry season). In each slaughter, all the animals' body components were weighed, so the empty body weight could be determined. The section between the 9th and 11th ribs was collected and evaluated to estimate the carcass physical and chemical compositions. Carcass and meat quality data were collected and evaluated. From a systematic review of the data, a meta-analysis will be used to interpret the interactions between the nutritional plans and experiments. This will generate more consistent conclusions, transforming the results of research studies into knowledge for the field, thereby providing greater precision and estimates of the treatments' effects. Thus, from an overview, we will have better bases for the design of new experiments, clarifying unanswered questions and doubts that have already been solved. (AU)
