Abstract

There are studies on copaiba oil have analysed its anti-inflammatory, analgesic and healing effects; however, no reports are available in the literature regarding its use and efficacy in ophthalmology. Thus, it is intended to evaluate the effects of copaiba oil (Copaifera multijuga Hayne) on corneal healing in ulcers caused by chemical burn in rats. For the first experiment, 24 males rats (Rattus novergicus albinus Wistar) weighing between 250 and 300 g. After general anaesthesia, ulcers are performed on the left eye using filter paper disc soaked in 1N sodium hydroxide, for 80 seconds. The animals will be divided into four groups of eight animals each. The G1 will receive copaiba oil at 5%; GT Tween 80 solution alone; GE commercial ophthalmic ointment of the retinol acetate, amino acids, methionine and chloramphenicol; and GL ocular lubricant of the hypromellose dextran at the intervals of 6 hours for 72 consecutive hours. After treatment the animals will be euthanized with sodium pentobarbital and your eye bulbs collected by subconjunctival enucleation technique. Following routine preparation of the slides for light microscopy and stained with HE, will be evaluated for the presence of corneal epithelium as well as the cell characteristics of the corneal layers, inflammatory cells and stromal neovascularization.
