Abstract
Despite the wide folk use of copaiba oil resin by the Brazilians since XIX century, the several studies corroborating many of its ethnopharmacological uses, and its production being around 800 tons per year, there is a great need of undertaking phytochemical, pharmacological, toxicological and clinical studies, aiming to guarantee the safety, efficacy and quality, which are mandatory for developing new phytomedicines. It should be pointed out that the majority of the reported data are related to the crude oil resin and there are few studies on the aerial parts of Copaifera plants. Therefore, the goal of this proposal is to undertake a wide study with eight species of Copaifera, such as: C. duckei Dwyer, C. martii Hayne, C. reticulata Ducke, C. multijuga Hayne e C. piresii Ducke, C. langsdorffii Desff, C. trapezifolia Hayne e C. officinalis (Jacq.) L, aiming to undertake the chemical and pharmacological validation, as well as the standardization of these plants extracts to establish the bases for the development of new medicines. For that, a multidisciplinary team will undertake the following: metabolomic study of the oil resins and the leaf extracts for the isolation and identification of the major secondary metabolites, to be used as chromatographic standards and in the biological assays; development of analytical methods and desreplication studies to guide both the phytochemical and seasonal studies; investigation of the anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immunomodulatory, wound healing, antimicrobial, antiparasitical and antitumor activities for the crude extracts and major isolated compounds; determination of both in vitro and in vivo toxicological parameters; studies of biotransformation by the gut bacteria; pharmacokinetic studies of the selected extracts and isolated compounds, as well as the use of spray drier technique to produce standardized crude extracts.
