Abstract

The use of plants for medicinal purposes has been practiced since ancient times and remains widespread to this day. Based on popular culture passed from generation to generation, many people have made use of plant species for the prevention or treatment of diseases. The trees of the genus Copaifera have been widely studied. This genus comprises about 72 species of which 20 occur in Brazil and is commonly found in the Southeast, Midwest and Amazon. The species of this genus have various biological properties such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal. The Copaifera lucens species is used for healing wounds, treatment of stroke, sore throat pain, and vision problems. Faced with various biological properties of the species Copaifera genus and the species Copaifera lucens, this study aims to evaluate the cytotoxic and genotoxic potential of the extract of the leaves of Copaifera lucens in mammalian cells in vitro and in vivo. In vitro test system, the cytotoxicity is evaluated by the clonogenic assay efficiency. The micronucleus test in Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts (V79 cells) and bone marrow Swiss mice will be used to study the possible genotoxicity extract. Cytotoxicity will be evaluated by cell division rates in vitro test system and the ratio of polychromatic erythrocytes and normochromatic erythrocytes in vivo test system. The results of this study will contribute to the knowledge of biological properties of species of Copaifera poorly studied.
