Abstract

Obesity is a chronic metabolic disease known by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue; Excessive supply of nutrients leads to increased production of free radicals generated by the oxidation of these nutrients and this promotes the infiltration of inflammatory cells and oxidative stress. The flour of the passion fruit peel is rich in fiber and antioxidants that can delay or prevent the manifestation of comorbiades and complications of obesity in target organs. Objective: To test the hypothesis that consumption of passion fruit peel flour (Passiflora edulis) decreases oxidative stress and alter body weight and metabolic and histological profile in adipose tissue and obesity target organs - liver, kidney and heart - in mice db / db obese. Material and Methods: Mice db / + (controls, n = 14) and db / db mice (obese, n = 14) will be randomized into 4 groups (7 animals per group; n = 28): eutrophic control (db / +, n = 7), Obese control (db / db n = 7), eutrophic intervention (db / +, n = 7) and Obese intervention (db / db n = 7). The intervention groups received treatment with passion fruit peel flour from the eighth week of life and are euthanized at 16 weeks of life. All animals will be evaluated for food intake, body weight, adiposity index, biochemical, histological, inflammatory and oxidative stress.
