The phylogeny of Polychaeta has been discussed and revised over the past decades and recently robust analysis showed that the clade is invalid and polyphyletic. Similar situations occur in lower clades such as members of Nereididae family, and the Laeonereis genus deserves special attention given to the status of monospecific genus and widely geographic distribution. In addition, individuals belonging to this genus seem to colonize and develop easily in impacted areas by human activities, mainly by the presence of organic pollutants and heavy metals. This brings Laeonereis as a strong candidate for a bioindicator species. Thus, this proposal aims to: review the occurrence of Laeonereis acuta and Laeonereis culveri in American Atlantic coast; review their taxonomy using morphological and molecular techniques and biogeographic analyzes, in order to resolve the taxonomic status of the genus; and confirm these individuals as model organisms in ecotoxicological studies
