Abstract

Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial chronic inflammatory disease, characterized by atheroma formation within blood vessels. The formation of atheroma occurs with accumulation of lipids, smooth muscle cells, connective tissue and inflammatory cells in the arterial intima of medium and large caliber vessels, gradually leading to a reduction of the vessel lumen or totally obstruction of it. The understanding of the formation of atherosclerosis and physiological assessment model of the disease are well substantiated by studies in humans and experimental models of mice. The use of the PRP as a new therapeutic option is due to its platelet concentration that increases mitosis, collagen production, recruitment of other cells to the site of inflammation, and induction of cell differentiation. However, the variety of protocols for their production, and the various drawings difficult therapy clinical studies product validation. An experimental study exploring the use of PRP as a modulator of atherosclerotic process is acting in the inflammatory pathways, antioxidants and / or angiogenic would be quite interesting. If the results are promising, studies that advance knowledge and clinical research phase I and II could be formulated. Further, lyophilization seems to be an option to concentrate more growth factors, cytokines and a good option for PRP storage. This product could contribute to a better understanding of anti and pro-inflammatory process present in atherosclerotic disease.
