Abstract

The disease caused Salmonella is one of the major health problems worldwide in terms of morbidity and mortality. Among Salmonella enterica serovars, the Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) comprises strains that have the ability to colonize the reproductive tract of chickens and to contaminate egg compounds, which enabled S. Enteritidis to become the most common Salmonella serovar causing human diseases. Despite uncertain, it is believed that an epidemic and more virulent clone had been inserted in Brazil by the commercial trade of chickens with other countries. This project aims to analyze comparatively by whole genome sequencing, the genomes of Salmonella Enteritidis strains isolated over 45 years in Brazil, including strains isolated in the pre and post-pandemic period in Brazil. For this, it will be studied 208 S. Enteritidis strains, being 24 isolated in the pre-pandemic period (1968-1992) and 184 strains isolated in the post-pandemic period (1993-2013) in several places of Brazil. All the 208 S. Enteritidis strains will have their whole genome sequenced using the Nextseq - Illumina equipment during the training in Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) under supervision of Dr. Marc Allard and, bioinformatic data analysis will be performed under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Janies from the University of North Caroline. Together, the results will contribute for a better characterization of S. Enteritidis, as well as will provide information about possible genomic differences between strains isolated in the pre and post-pandemic period in Brazil. Moreover, the results will possibly collaborate with the elucidation of the reasons of the beginning of the pandemic in Brazil, as well as, may provide evidences that will help to explain the emergency of this serovar as the most isolated one worldwide.
