Abstract

Nanomaterials are already present in many aspects of our everyday lives: our cars, houses, electronics, drugs and even in our food. However, while nanotechnology revolutionizes the society by introducing new products, it also brings a growing concern about the risks associated with their widespread use. In this context, studies designed to sustainable development and safe applications of nanotechnology are essential, since regulatory frameworks for nanotoxicology trials have not been established. This proposal aims to assess the biosecurity of two distinct and innovative nanomaterials, NanoAgri and NanoCarb subprojects. NanoAgri will assess the toxicity of poly-µ-caprolactone nanocapsules containing atrazine for use in agriculture, with a great economic and social potential. Whereas NanoCarb will assess the toxicity of carbon nanotubes in the development of scaffolds for the regeneration of peripheral nerves, supporting a safe and revolutionary application of these nanomaterials in the medical field. The multidisciplinarity of the subprojects intend to provide the development of the know-how in nanotoxicology field, contributing to validation of common techniques in the future evaluation of different nanomaterials. In addition, the results of both subprojects will contribute to determination of essential regulatory frameworks for harmonization of methods and study protocols for nanomaterials testing, serving as a link of scientific research transposition into technological applications.
