Abstract

In the fifteenth century, travel to distant lands began to become more frequent among the Iberians, but unlike what happened in other European kingdoms, the most notable sent were not religious but belonging to the nobility. Some of them left records that contributed decisively to feed their taste for travel and to know other people and places. The kingdom of Castile, some travel reports we were bequeathed allow us to see that one of the major emphases of the records rests on the one hand, the risks and difficulties of wandering, the other, on the steps to be taken by traveller to ensure their safety and the care that was provided then you, as the inns, for example. Aiming to examine the conditions and amount of travel during this period in the Iberian kingdoms took their first steps in seeking to expand, our specific focus is on hazards and protections commonly described by wayfarers. By analyzing the Castilian travel links to distant lands to the south and east, we will seek to map more specifically: the dangers related to geography and climatic conditions; the risk of disease; setbacks along the way, especially related to distances; the possible attacks of the native people; cities, ports, hosting places. The documentary corpus will consist of reports about nobles shifts to places that were still little knowledge of their peers during the Four: Embajada a Tamorlán, 1403 and 1406; El Victorial, 1404 and 1406; Andanzas y viajes de un hidalgo español, in 1436 and 1439; and the Libro del Infante Don Pedro de Portugal, dating from the second half of the fifteenth century.
