Abstract

The processing of comprehension is highly complex and involves a range of different cognitive functions such as language, attention and memory. Simple tests designed to assess cognitive functions in an integrated fashion are scarce in the Brazilian milieu. The Token Test was created by De Renzi and Vignolo (1962) and, following its initial publication, gave rise to a vast array of related publications. Despite the large number of studies on the Token Test, all previous work has employed the earlier version of the test. One of the main criticisms of the Token Test since its publication has been the absence of normatization and of clear predefined criteria for its application - in terms of materials and instructions, as well as recording and scoring. In order to overcome these shortcomings, a new computerized version has been devised which has no such inherent variations in type and form of presentation of the stimuli (McNeil, Pratt, Szuminsky, Sung, Fossett, Fassbinder & Lim, 2015). The new version has advantages beyond the form of presentation and uniformity of stimuli, by allowing responses to be analyzed for reaction time on each test item together with qualitative analysis of errors (inappropriate answer, inversion, type of switching). Thus, the response profile allows the nature of the error to be determined in terms of comprehension, attention and working memory. In addition, the new version also covers reading comprehension. Therefore, the primary objective of this visit/internship is to produce the complex computerized program to carry out adaptation of the Token Test (both verbal and written forms) to Brazilian Portuguese.
