Abstract

Given its toxicity and high concentration on effluents, the study of biological removal of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) from wastewaters has become attractive. Although previous studies already provided useful data regarding LAS co-digestion in laundry wastewater with synthetic co-substrates. It is necessary to study alternatives, such as co-digestion with sewage. The present study intend to evaluate the efficiency of biological LAS removal from laundry wastewater diluted in sewage, using an EGSB pilot scale reactor, with different LAS applied loads (LAL). The reactor will be kept in mesophilic temperature (30 ºC) and it will be operated with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 40 h. Monitoring physical-chemical analyses will be held, such as pH, alkalinity, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), LAS removal efficiency, nitrate, sulphate, sulphide and effluent solids concentration. The operational stages will be divided in adaptation of the sludge with domestic sewage, and laundry wastewater dilution in domestic sewage in order to obtain 5, 20 and 45 mgLAS L-1 on reactor feeding. On the end of each operational stage, granulometry, LAS adsorbed on sludge, and RNAr 16s gene sequencing of microbial community will be assessed. (AU)
