Internationalization and student mobility: the Science Without Borders program at the State University of Campinas

Abstract

Between 2011 and 2016, 2384 students of the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) received grants from the Science Without Borders program, in which 72% were for undergraduate students, 26% for graduate students and 2% for visiting researchers and youth talents. This number represents 6% of the average number of students enrolled each year at the university. Therefore, Unicamp was one of the Brazilian universities that have received the biggest number of grants from this program. This project aims to evaluate the results of the Science Without Borders at Unicamp, in the period from 2011 to 2015, checking if both social and individual returns are consistent with the objectives proposed by the program. The motivation for the research is due to the following factors: (a) large scale of the program; (b) program potential to generate benefits to the students and to society and (c) lack of evaluations of the program. The research will be divided into two parts: (1) literature review on the subject and (2) case study of Unicamp (developed through surveys with the program beneficiaries and managers at the University). The survey results will help Unicamp in terms of institutional learning and improvement of student mobility initiatives. (AU)
