Abstract

Deep brain stimulation is a stereotactic neurosurgical intervention, initially introduced as alternative therapeutic approach for refractory movement disorders to pharmacologic treatment of choice. Studies have supported the indication of deep brain stimulation for tremor associated with Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. In practice, the deep brain stimulation has also been used, with or without regulation, in other neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases. Given the diversity of possible applications already known and studied, the distance between the scientific evidence and practice and the high prevalence of diseases that still need new effective therapeutic approaches, this study aims to map and analyze the evidence of systematic reviews published on the effectiveness and safety of deep brain stimulation in the treatment of various neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders.
