Abstract

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by atrophy of the cerebral cortex and loss of cortical and subcortical neurons leading to cognitive impairment and dementia. The olfactory system is one of the first areas affected by AD. Decreased ability to sense detect smells and odors is present in the early diagnosis of AD, even before the cognitive impairment may represent a good accurate and early diagnosis of this disease method. The objectives of this project aims to investigate the association between particulate matter PM2.5, data contained in MODAU database, sociodemographic data collected through interview form and post-mortem analysis of the olfactory system and brain tissue, trying to understand the effects of environmental pollution, quality indexes of life and development of Alzheimer's Disease in residents of São Paulo.
