Abstract

Neural pathways integrating the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic) and the immune system have been described. One of them highlights the importance of parasympathetic activation inhibiting the innate immune response. Thus, considering that baroreflex activation elicits combined parasympathetic activity and sympathetic inhibition, the activation of the baroreflex may have play significant role modulating the inflammatory response. On the other hand, another proposes the regulation of the immune system by sympathetic activation. However, these neural mechanisms proposed have been originated from studies in anaesthetized animals (mice and rats). It is noteworthy that this project proposes to investigate, through experimental models in unanesthetized Wistar rats, the roles of the sympathetic and parasympathetic function in the modulation of systemic immune response induced by intravenous administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) extracted from Escherichia coli. To accomplish this, it is proposed to carry out protocols in unanesthetized rats receiving intravenous LPS as follows: 1) to investigate the role of the baroreflex, i.e. parasympathetic activation and sympathetic inhibition it is proposed to electrically stimulate the aortic depressor nerve; 2) to investigate the role of sympathetic activation, through baroreflex deactivation, it will be performed the bilateral carotid occlusion combined, or not, with the denervation of the carotid chemoreceptors and aortic baroreceptors; the pharmacological blockade of ²-adrenergic receptors with propranolol will be used as well. Therefore, it is expected that these protocols carried out in unanesthetized rats, will characterize the individual or combined participation of sympathetic and parasympathetic function in the modulation of systemic inflammatory response induced by LPS.
