Abstract

The long duration of mountain building and collapse processes makes geochronology of orogenic systems very challenging. These processes can last for tens of millions of years and, therefore, a correct interpretation of geochronological data depends on linking the obtained ages to pressure-temperature conditions. These correlations allow age determinations of the different orogenic stages, being very powerful tools in paleogeographic reconstructions. The ages can be linked to pressure-temperature conditions by a combination of several techniques, including textural analysis, thermodynamic modelling, geochronology and geochemistry. This approach, known as petrochronology, is a relatively new science that has been increasingly growing over the few last decades mainly as a result of the developments in in-situ mineral analysis techniques. The aim of this project is to apply the petrochronology to determine the P-T-t paths of the metasedimentary rocks of the Seridó Group and associated orthogneisses in the northern Borborema Province. The timing of pressure and temperature conditions of the orogen will be determined through a combination of thermodynamic modelling and textural, geochronological and geochemical data of zircon, monazite, titanite and garnet, which will be obtained in-situ by electron microprobe and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). In this way, it is intended to contribute to the understanding of the Neoproterozoic tectonic evolution of the Borborema Province, during the agglutination of western Gondwana, using a cutting-edge approach.
