Abstract

The Corynebacterium genus still is poorly studied, despite the importance of toxigenic species for both human and animal health. The impact of the infection by these microorganisms on swine production has not yet been addressed, both in the international scenario and in the Brazilian reality, although pigs have been cited as carriers of Corynebacterium species. The aim of the present study is to characterize strains of Corynebacterium spp. isolated from sow's genito-urinary tract. The strains were previously identified as C. confusum, C. amycolatum, C. diphtheriae and for a group of six strains it was not possible to identify the species by MALDI-TOF MS and 16S rRNA and rpoB sequencing. Therefore, the present project proposes the assessment of the virulence of the different Corynebacterium species isolated from swine with the in vivo model of Galleria mellonella; the characterization and comparison of the respective biochemical profiles by the Biolog® system, and sequencing and comparative genomic analysis. The association of the in vivo virulence assessment with the genomic analysis will allow the identification of the genetic mechanisms of the observed virulence. The genomic comparison of strains of the same species, originated from different hosts, will also enable the identification of possible genetic predisposition to hosts. In addition, the genomic analysis will conclude the bacterial identification to confirm the suspected isolation of a new species or subspecies of Corynebacterium from swine in Brazil. (AU)
