Abstract

Brazil is considered the main producer of citrus/orange and it is estimated that the residues generated during the processing of this raw material can reach up to 60% of the total produced, being composed mainly by the fruit peels and bagasse. One of the obstacles to the production of compounds of biotechnological interest, such as methane, hydrogen, organic acids and alcohols, from these residues is the difficult degradation of some of its components, such as lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. Thus, it is necessary to apply physical, chemical or biological pretreatment for promoting hydrolysis of lignocellulosic components. This research aims to evaluate the obtainment of compounds of biotechnological interest from citrus/orange processing residues using thermophilic UASB sludge applied to the treatment of vinasse sugarcane as inoculum. The experiments will be performed in batch-operated flasks using different strategies for breaking the lignocellulosic structure of the orange residues. For this purpose, the statistical method of Experimental Planning will be used by means of the response surface to determine the best variables of the experimental conditions (temperature, concentration of yeast extract and pH) in relation to the strategy of rupture of the lignocellulosic structure (hydrothermolysis or alkaline hydrolysis with hydrogen peroxide) and also of the substrate used (peels, bagasse or peels + bagasse together). The microbial community will be evaluated using the large-scale sequencing technique of the 16S RNAr gene via the Illumina. (AU)
