Abstract

Light olefins are essential building blocks in the chemical industry and important byproducts of various chemical processes. Because olefins and paraffins with the same number of carbons have similar volatility and polarity, the separation of olefin/paraffin mixtures is oftentimes challenging. Silver-based ionic liquids (ILs), which were recently developed by Prof. Jared Anderson's group, have been evaluated as stationary phases in gas chromatography to improve the separation of olefin/paraffin mixtures. A wall coated open tubular column with silver-based IL stationary phase has potential use as a second dimension column in comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC x GC). GC x GC chromatography employs a pair of serially connected GC columns (generally, nonpolar and polar columns), linked through a modulator. The effluent from the first column is trapped in the modulator for a fixed period of time (modulation time) before it is focused and injected into the second column. The chromatograms obtained through repeated trapping and injection are rendered in two dimensions with the aid of specialized software. The peaks are separated in the respective axes on the basis of boiling point and polarity. In this project, a GC × GC system with a nonpolar column in the first dimension and a silver-based IL in the second dimension will be evaluated for separation of light olefin/paraffin mixtures. Regarding the second dimension, four columns with different [Ag+][NTf2-] and [Ag+(MIM)(BIM)][NTf2-] ratios will be synthesized. These columns will be compared with commercial columns (HP-5 and SUPELCOWAX). Given the selectivity toward olefins and the thermal stability, sillver-based ILs prepared with different IL cations and anions will be evaluated. This proposed work will further improve the selectivity of light olefin separation with a silver-based IL stationary capillary column.
