Abstract

This research project aims to investigate within the formal semantics of natural languages the phenomenon of "contradirectionality" and the semantics of locational and directional prepositional modifiers, as well as temporal adjuncts, using the tools of "space vector semantics". These investigations are intrinsically connected, they deal with topics that have not yet been explored in the analysis of Brazilian Portuguese in the context of formal semantics, and constitute an important contribution to the description of this particular language besides being relevant to a typological perspective which contrasts, for instance, Romance and Germanic languages. At the end of this project, which will be developed at the University of Utrecht (Netherlands), under the supervision of prof. Joost Zwarts, we will present other ongoing researches in which we will participate during our research stage.
