Abstract

The formation of chiral compounds during the synthesis of new drugs and related substances, which are administered clinically in the form of racemic mixture, is amply described in the literature. The therapeutic activity of these compounds is strongly dependent on their spatial rearrangement, which leads to different pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties, where one isomer may produce the desired therapeutic activities, while the other may be inactive or even produce toxic effects. Alternatives to bypassing the formation of chiral compounds include stereoselective synthesis and post-synthesis separation. However, the high costs associated with these techniques restrict enantiomeric purification to drugs with strong economic appeal, rather than the therapy of neglected diseases. This research proposal aims the development of low cost polymeric hybrid membranes with high chiral resolution capability. Mesoporous materials obtained from the rice husk biomass will be evaluated for their chiral selection ability. These materials will be incorporated into the polymeric membrane and structural variables, such as the incorporated content, membrane preparation and the polymer-mesoporous material compatibility will be investigated in relation to the chiral resolution ability. It is expected that the hybrid membranes produce simultaneously exhibit a high chiral separation capacity, mechanical strength and regenerative capacity for long-term use. (AU)
