Abstract

The Zika Virus (ZIKV) is an arbovirus belonging to the family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus. Arboviruses are viruses characterized by being kept in the wild in enzootic cycles, involving hematophagous arthropod vectors and may participate in an urban cycle in which humans are the main hosts. In 2015, there was an epidemiological outbreak of ZIKV in Brazil, which is considered by the World Health Organization as an emergency public health emergency pathogen of international concern. In addition to the mode of vector transmission, by species of the genus Aedes, other non-vector transmission media have already been reported, such as sexual, vertical, transfusional, saliva and urine transmission. About 80% of cases of ZIKV infection are asymptomatic and, when present, clinical manifestations are very similar to other arbovirus infections, making the diagnosis of this disease a major challenge. Currently, even though several clinical complications are known, following the ZIKV infection, few studies aimed to investigate the serological profile of these patients. Therefore, this project aims to conduct a prospective/descriptive/epidemiological study, aiming to investigate the frequency of ZIKV infection in puerperae and neonates, determining their serological profile and the molecular characterization of the Zika virus. This study is based on the importance of understanding the full scope of the effect of Zika virus in pregnancy, since it has not been elucidated yet, besides the need for epidemiological data that can help guide the medical and public health responses to this arbovirose.
