Abstract

Although there is an extensive literature on the microbiota associated with periodontal lesions and on the one associated with endodontic lesions, few studies have focused on the investigation of the microbiota of the combined endoperiodontal lesions (EPL), particularly of teeth with chronic periodontal disease and secondary endodontic involvement. The objectives of the present study are: 1) To detect the presence, levels and proportions of specific bacterial species in root canals (RC) and periodontal pockets (PP) of teeth with teeth with chronic periodontal disease and secondary endodontic involvement; 2) To investigate and quantify the presence of endotoxins (LPS) and lipoteicoic acid (LTA) in RC and PP; 3) To correlate specific microorganisms (MO) and LPS / LTA levels with the clinical and radiographic aspects of the involved teeth. Ten patients with vital pulp and associated PP, characterizing endoperiodontal involvement, will be selected. Samples will be collected with sterile / pyrogenic paper points from RC and PP and frozen for future analysis. The MO of both sites will be identified using molecular techniques such as Nested-PCR and checkerboard. The quantification of LPS and LTA in both sites will be performed using the LAL and ELISA methods, respectively. All the results obtained, as well as the clinical and radiographic aspects of the involved teeth, will be tabulated in Excel and later analyzed statistically by specific software. (AU)
