Evaluation of malocclusion and masticatory pattern in morbidly obese patients

Abstract

The presence of malocclusion may lead to a change in the masticatory pattern which in turn may contribute as one of the etiological factors for obesity. The present study aims to evaluate the presence and severity of malocclusion as well as the masticatory pattern present in morbidly obese candidates for bariatric surgery. The sample will consist of 80 patients in the age group of 19 to 49 years old, divided into 2 groups: Obesian Morbid Group (n = 40) and Control-Eutrophic Group (n = 40). The nutritional evaluation will be performed through the Body Mass Index (BMI), being morbidly obese (IMCe40 kg / m2) and eutrophic (BMI 18.5 to 24.99 kg / m2). To evaluate the malocclusion, the Dental Aesthetics Index (DAI) will be used, and for evaluation of the masticatory pattern data will be collected on: incision, grinding, lip closure, speed, noise, atypical muscle contractions and pattern during chewing, according to the protocol of the MBF Orofacial Myofunctional Exam. A descriptive analysis will be performed, using means and standard deviations for the studied variables. For the comparison between the two groups the Mann-Whitney test will be applied. All variables dependent on the study (malocclusion and masticatory pattern) will be correlated with the independent variables (gender, age and nutritional status) using the Spearman and Kruskall-Wallis correlation tests.
