Abstract Rationale: Obesity is a multifactorial disease that presents different phenotypes. There are obese metabolically healthy (OMH), obese metabolically obese (OMO), and lean metabolically obese (LMO). Evidence suggests that the intestinal microbiota modulates energy and glycemic homeostasis via the production of short chain fatty acids (SCFA), produced through the fermentation of resistant starch and dietary fibers by the intestinal microbiota. The discovery of SCCA cell receptors in various tissues (musculature, white adipose, and liver) increased the interest in SCFAs as communication molecules between gut and peripheral tissues. Objective: To compare the plasmatic profile of SCFA between the phenotypes: lean metabolically healthy, OMH, LMO and OMO; and investigate associations between SCFA vs dietary fiber intake, body composition, and components of energy and glycemic homeostasis. Methods: Cross-sectional study that will be an arm of the Nutritionists Health Study, with 120 women, 18-35 years old, divided into four groups of 30 individuals. The definition of metabolic health will take into account: blood pressure, glycemic, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, and diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. The assessments will include: lifestyle, anthropometry, body composition by DEXA; and lipid, inflammatory and glycemic plasma profiles. The components of energy and glycemic homeostasis will be evaluated by indirect calorimetry associated with the standard meal test; in which glucose, insulin, C peptide, GLP-1 and SCFA will be measured.Perspectives: It is expected to understand to what extent the SCFA are related to the studied parameters. The findings may contribute to a new therapeutic focus of research for the management of obesity, defining risk conditions, and providing subsidies to plan interventions. | |
