The dialogical constituition of Frankeinstein: ressignification of human existency from TV show Penny Dreadful

Abstract

The project proposes to analyze, based on studies of the Bakhtinian's Philosophy of Language perspective, the construction of Frankenstein's images (through the birth of the characters Victor Frankenstein, Caliban - later self proclaimed as John Clare - Proteus and Lily in the relation they have among each other) in the TV Show Penny Dreadful (2014). This project also stablish a dialogue (intertext and interdiscursive) with the novel Frankenstein (1818), of Mary Shelley. To achieve this, the concepts of subject, ideology and statement, postulated within the Circle of Bakhtin, Medvedev and Volochinov, going to be mobilized. The aim is to understand how the subject is constituted by contradictory opposites - good and evil, death and life, light and shadows - not as a dichotomous but ambivalent way, and from this to realize how human is each Frankenstein and how Frankenstein is the (hu)man - this is the relevance of this study proposal. To that art and life intersect through the values that constitute the utterances, in a reflected and refracted way, without completion, but with aesthetic finishing. The hypothesis is that interdiscursivity and intertextuality are the architectural compositional style of the series and that, through them, the contrary human Frankensteinian essence being constitute and explicated materially in language. This is a qualitative and bibliographic research. The method to be used is what Volochínov calls sociological, by comparison, with stages of description, analysis and interpretation. (AU)
