GPNMB is a protein that is related to antiapoptotic mechanisms and recent studies suggest its neuroprotective role. GPNMB can be cleaved and its extracellular fragment interacts with a transmembrane protein called Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA). NKA is essential to electrolytic control of the cell and also has a signaling function that influences in inflammatory processes. Several studies suggest that NKA neural activity changes under neuroinflamatory processes and that NKA modulation results in effects on neuroinflamation.Inflammation is a defense process of the cell, which can be induced by several different factors, as LPS. Inflammation initiates several cellular processes that can be harmful to the organism. Several cells types are involved in this process, however, in the brain, the neuroinflammatory processes are mediated by microglial cells ans astrocytes.The correlation between neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration has been widely studied nowadays. Thus, this project has as objective to evaluate the role of GPNMB in the inflammatory pathways in microglial cells, which can be a possible new treatment to neurodegenerative diseases.
