Abstract

Propolis is a natural resinous material, collected by bees from plants and mixed with wax from their glands. The Brazilian propolis has wide traditional use and several biological activities, being highly appreciated in Asian countries. One of the most prominent types of propolis is the red one, which in Brazil has as its botanical source the species Dalbergia ecastophyllum (L.) Taub. (Fabaceae). Chemically, the red propolis is characterized by the presence of flavanones, flavonols, triterpenes, catechins, chalcones, aurones, guttiferons and xanthones. Both extracts and some isolated compounds present antioxidant, antimicrobial, cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory activities, among others, providing to the red propolis a high potential for the development of pharmaceutical products. However, there are few studies that guarantee the chemical characterization and safety in its use. Thus, there is a need for isolation and identification of sufficient amounts of propolis metabolites for the develop analytical methods and conduct the pharmacological and toxicological studies foreseen in the project "Attainment of chemical, analytical, biological, pharmacological and technological studies to fill the gaps on the development of Brazilian propolis sector", FAPESP process 2017/04138-8. Thus, it is proposed the development of the chromatographic conditions using high-speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC) equipment, for the fractionation and isolation of the constituents of the red propolis. Other complementary techniques may be used, if necessary, including use of sephadex gel and preparative high-performance liquid chromatography.
