Chemical composition of essential oils from new varieties of mandarins (Citrus deliciosa) precocious, mid and late-season

Abstract

The essential oils of citrus have some applications in the industry as in perfumery, household cleaner products and food industry. They also have antimicrobial activities that can be explored by the pharmaceutical industry. The aim of this research is to assess the yield and chemical composition of the essential oils of six new hybrids of mandarins (early, mid and late-season). For this, samples of the new varieties of mandarins will be obtained from the Sylvio Moreira Citrus Center in Cordeirópolis - SP. The samples will be the early-season mandarin: IAC 580 Victória and Mogi das Cruzes IAC 606, mid-season mandarin: Rio IAC 194 and Tardia da Sicília IAC 589 and late-season mandarin: Late IAC 585 and Montenegrina. The essential oils of the fruit peel will be obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The chemical composition of the essential oils will also be evaluated by chemometric tools such as principal component analysis. It is believed that, with this research, important information will be provided to citrus farmers on which of the new varieties are capable of supplying essential oils with higher added value.
