Abstract

The intent of this project is to analyze Rodolfo Amoedo painting A morte de Atala (1883) and contextualize it in the 19th century Brazilian art scene, drawing a parallel between that space and the French art, and the dissemination of François René de Chateaubriand's novel Atala (1801). By creating a dialogue between literature and visual arts, the project seeks to retrieve other representations of scenes from the same work, in order to comprehend the theme's representation and the imagetic repertoire which Amoedo gathered when studying in Rio de Janeiro and during his time living in Paris. The painting is an essential tool to understand the developments in the French romanticism and its reverberations in similar works in Brazil. The paper will approach essential themes about the Brazilian background, such as Indianism and nationalism, which will be explored in a manner to contemplate their complexities and to question the role that cultural and artistic French references had over them.
