Abstract

The present research has as its main object a part of the works of the welsh author Raymond Williams (1921-1988). Our work will be centered, particularly, in the book The Country and the City (1973), and its circulation in Brazil, after its first edition in 1989, published and translated by Companhia das Letras. Our work starts from a previous study, which showed the expressive circulation of this work in Brazil especially in the public universities. Still, there is still a few problems that require further investigation. First, in terms of circulation, we need to study how the actions of certain publishers, public libraries, and researchers that used Williams's works and, in particularly this book, stimulated serials of reprints of the Country and the City in the national scenery. Then we need to focus on thesis, articles and books that used this work as its main object and try to understand the exact ideas that were being gestated by those intellectual groups. Despite the fact that Culture and Society (1958) is the book that gave Raymond Williams world recognition, in Brazil, The Country and the City, and its idea of nature as a problem of culture and society, seems to be more in the spotlight when we observe the data about its circulation into the public universities. Therefore, this subject needs more attention. We need to combine it with studies about nature, so important to social thinking in Brazil, as we will demonstrate. (AU)
