Abstract

Due to the lack of space given in traditional media for themes other than those that contemplate the interests of great political and economic powers, social movements have explored strategies of visibility in traditional media, in digital media and through alternative channels. In the context of mediatized society, we seek to assess whether visibility is no longer a means to an end and to what extent this effort is effective. This thesis aims to understand how the centrality of the media in the current political and social configuration contributes to a process of centralization of public visibility in contemporary social movements. Specifically, we seek to identify in what way two contemporary youth social movements, Levante Popular da Juventude and Movimento Brasil Livre, formulate their strategies of media visibility and what these strategies are, through tracking and mapping the communication networks of the movements during the period of one year, observing the reach of media products, subjects that interact and organizations with which they articulate.
