Abstract

The use of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to accumulate recombinant proteins was already demonstrated. However, besides the need for this production platform improvement, some proteins were not still evaluated to be expressed and accumulated in specific cell organelles. Somatotropin is a hormonal peptide synthesized and secreted by the anterior pituitary in humans and other vertebrates, and it stimulates growth, cell reproduction and regeneration in humans and animals. This biological drug is consumed by people with this hormone deficiency and that present, mainly, short stature. In order to verify the possibility of using the microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as a low cost platform for the expression of the protein somatotropin, microalgae chloroplasts will be genetically transformed by the biobalistics technique. The expression, accumulation and analysis of the molecule will be evaluated through PCR techniques and western blotting. (AU)
