Feasibility analysis of intraoral scanning versus conventional impression for implant prothesis in edentulous patients: a systematic review

Abstract

Intraoral and facial scanning represented an important advance for oral rehabilitation. There are doubts if this procedure for partial and total toothless patients is effective. On the one hand, the conventional molding technique employed requires more materials, technical training, time and professional skill. In another way, intraoral scanning may be difficult in regions with inclined implants and the presence of saliva. There is no consensus in the literature as to which molding technique (conventional or digital) would be able to offer better results. Thus, the objective of this project will be to conduct a systematic review to assess the survival rate, aesthetic satisfaction, biological complications and techniques of patients who underwent complete fixed prosthesis rehabilitation (protocol and removable), under conventional or digital method. As a realization criterion, the PRISMA protocol and registration in the PROSPERO database will be executed. A detailed search of the main databases (PubMed, SciELO, Cochrane, EMBASE) will be performed for articles published until June 2020. The Comprehensive Meta-analysis and Review Manager 5 (RevMan 5) software will be used as well as the Microsoft Excel program for the purposes of performing the meta-analysis. A significance value of 0.05 will be considered. Based on the studies researched, the objective is to establish if there is viability in the current use of intraoral scanning to obtain implant-supported fixed implants (protocols), as well as removable (overdentures), furthermore to make appropriate recommendations for clinical practice.
