Abstract

Titanium alloys have been widely used as biomaterials, especially for orthopedic prostheses and dental implants, but these materials have Young's modulus three times greater than human cortical bone, because of this, new alloys are having produced with the proposes of decrease the Young's modulus to a good mechanical compatibility with the bone. Also, the oxide film that occurs naturally at the surface of titanium presents better compatibility with bone cells than other alloys, granting it to be a more suitable material. However, there is still a biomechanical discrepancy between the developed materials and their medical application, which causes an unsuitable lifespan of these biomaterials. The main objective of this project is the development and characterization of Ti-25Ta-Zr (Zr= 0, 25 and 50%wt.) system alloys. It will also be performed the study of the alloy surface through electrochemical deposition techniques (Micro-arc Oxidation). The aim is to incorporate bioactive elements and particles to the titanium surface, in order to improve the implant and bone cells interaction. This stage can be held at the University of Minho and Porto in Portugal. (AU)
