In this project, xanthan based scaffolds containing magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) will be used as reservoirs for bioactive molecules. First, MNP will be synthesized ex situ and then they will be incorporated in the scaffolds by immersion. Caffeine, 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine, belonging to the family of purines will be tested. The amount of incorporated caffeine will be optimized in order to keep cell viability at high leve. The caffeine release from the magnetic scaffolds will be tested as a function of pH, ionic strength, absence and presence of external magnetic field (magnets). The release conditions will be optimized in order to be applied in the proliferation and differentiation of neuronal cells , in collaboration with Prof. Henning Ulrich.
