Abstract

The constant nanotechnology growth has caused concerns about the adverse effects of nanoparticles on the ecosystem and on human health. In Brazil, there is legislation neither for the regulation of the maximum number of NPs in products nor for its proper disposal in the environment. Currently, the Single Particle Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry is considered as the state of art for the characterization of nanoparticles, due to its great sensitivity and short analysis time. In this context, the goal of this project is the development of analytical methods for nanoparticle characterization of silica and silver employed during the cultivation of soybean by single particle ICP-MS/MS. The choice of soybean was based on its great importance for Brazilian agriculture and economy. The leaf samples will be analyzed for the purpose of assessing the translocation. In this case, a suitable sample preparation procedure and the optimal operational conditions will be established. Furthermore, the use of gases in the collision and reaction cell will be applied to minimize the spectral interferences. The single cell mode will also be operated to investigate the possible interactions between the nanoparticles and the vegetable cells. The obtained results will provide information for risk assessment and to elucidate processes involving nanoparticles and plants. In this sense, in addition to the area of analytical chemistry, this proposal will also contribute to other areas of knowledge, such as agriculture, biology and the environment science.
